Metabolic Care, Brain Based Therapy and Chiropractic  Wellness

Dr. Phil Gilman

We prefer to work with those who tried modern medicine (drug therapy) and traditional chiropractic with little or no results. If that is you, then read on.

Dr. Phil Gilman BSc. DC BCIM FMA FASBE graduated from Northwestern College of Chiropractic located in St. Paul,  in 1981. Prior to studying at Chiropractic School, he studied food production and nutrition as he received his B.Sc in agriculture from South Dakota State University.

Dr. Gilman works with many patients who have tried modern medicine (drug therapy) and traditional chiropractic with little or no results. The reason is that our approach is different and unique.  We do not treat disease directly, rather we discover functional cause and correct them.  As a result those who have suffered for years finally get improvements.  The result is greater Joy, Energy, and Focus in life.  We help Spring you Back into Life or in other words:  LifeSpring Wellness.

We divide care into 6 aspects.

1. Brain based therapy (BBT)---testing, and affecting the brain balance. The brain is the primary factor in all health and life.

2. Neuro intergration technology-- very specific brain exercises (specialized neurobics) and techniques to strenthen and balance your brain.

3. Metabolic ---biochemical testing involving blood, saliva, urine, stool tests along with questionairres to determine precise biochemical imbalances.

4. Upper cervical care---taking stress off the brain stem.

5. Global care postural care--changing and correcting the structural spinal problems utilizing xrays before and after care to monitor real spinal changes beyond pain relief.

6. Local care relief care known as segmental care--typical chiropractic care--ie adjust bone for pain relief. This is what most chiropractors practice.

It is critical to determine WHY you have a problem and to get to the cause of it instead of just temporary relief.

Dr. Gilman has been practicing for over 25 years. Since he began practicing chiropractic, Dr. Gilman has kept up to date on many continuing educational classes, ensuring that his patients receive the most comprehensive and advanced chiropractic care.

He is certified in acupuncture and applied kinesiology. He is a Fellow of Applied Spinal Biomechanical Engineering (FASBE) and a Fellow of Medicina Alternitiva (FMA). Dr. Gilman has received a certificate in Neurodiagnosis from Northwestern Health Sciences University.

Dr. Gilman is a published researcher:

Diagnosis of thyroid dysfunction: applied kinesiology compared to clinical observation and laboratory tests. JMPT 1984 Jun;7(2):99-104

He has a special interest in functional neurology, low thyroid, hypothyroid, autoimmune thyroid dysfunction , diabetes management, migraine, peripheral neuropathy, dizziness, autism, ADHD, and dyslexia.

What is Brain Based Therapy?

Brain Based Therapy (BBT) is an amazingly powerful, all natural healing technique used to restore people to their optimum state of health.

How does the brain work?

Your brain controls and coordinates all function of the body (Gray’s Anatomy). When functioning normally, the cerebellum, which is the back bottom part of your cranium, sends messages or “fires” to the brain (right and left hemisphere) which in turn “fires” to the brain stem (mesencephalon, pons, and medulla). This is called the “Brain Loop”.

Normal Brain Function

Your health, well-being, physical vitality, mental clarity, and emotional stability are all directly correlated with proper brain function.. the “Brain Loop”.

When functioning correctly, the cerebellum receives adequate input, sending normal input to the brain’s frontal lobes, which sends sufficient input to the lower brainstem, keeping the mesencephalon from over-firing.

What goes wrong?

Stress – physical, chemical, and emotional stress will adversely effect this “brain loop”. Stress is not necessarily a bad thing. However, it is the constant, pervasive, never-ending stress of our culture that is so detrimental.

If one side of the cerebellum is not receiving enough nerve input, it cannot send sufficient nerve input to the frontal lobe, which can’t send enough input to the lower brainstem to keep the mesencephalon from over-firing.

What’s the deal with the mesencephalon?

The mesencephalon (a.k.a. upper brain stem, a.k.a. midbrain, a.k.a. cerebral peduncle) normally is inhibited by the brain. In other words, when the “brain loop” is intact, the mesencephalon is turned off (or on low).

However, once stress interrupts the “brain loop”, the mesencephalon is left unchecked. Basically, the brain gets stuck in a sympathetic (fight or flight) response.

A mesencephalon that is not firing properly causes symptoms such as fibromyalgia, ADD, sciatica, migraines, etc.

What about the cerebellum?

Another key part to the “brain loop” is the cerebellum. This is the back, bottom part of your brain that controls your balance and coordination, spinal postural muscles, and terminates eye movements. When one side of your cerebellum is not firing properly it can lead to a host of common ailments.

A mis-firing cerebellum will cause one side of the postural muscles to be in constant spasm. This one-sided muscle spasm will cause imbalances in the spinal bones. Additionally, individual vertebrae will lock up and be restricted in their normal movement. Consequently, chronic back and neck pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, disc herniations, and sciatica may develop. Once pathologies are ruled out, chronic dizziness and balance disorders are usually the result of cerebellar dysfunction.

How do you fix the brain?

A thorough BBT neurological examination will reveal which aspect of your brain is not firing properly. Since once side of the body is controlled by the opposite side of the brain (example: right brain controls the left side of the body), most treatments are given on one side of the body to stimulate the opposite hemisphere of the brain.

A safe, gentle, hands-on, dynamic integration process is used to re-boot, reconnect and restore proper brain function. Traditional chiropractic instruments and/or adjustments are also used, but they are used in a very precise manner – to stimulate function in the effected part of the brain.

In addition, visual, auditory, and olfactory stimulation, heat, eye movements, eye exercises, and other modalities may be used to increase brain firing.

What health problems can you help with?

Please understand that BBT is not a specific treatment for any disease, illness or disorder. We do not try to cure anything.

Our expertise lies in naturally and holistically re-wiring your brain and then getting out of the way so your body can heal.

However, once the “brain loop” is restored and any brain imbalances are minimized – amazing things can happen. The following is a list of health conditions people have shown significant improvement with:

  • Balance disorders
  • peripheral neuropathy
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • hypothyroid
  • fatigue
  • insomnia
  • MS symptoms
  • Diabetes blood sugar
  • Digestive-IBS, Chrohn's,Ulcerative Colitis
  • dizziness
  • mental fog
  • early Alzheimer’s symptoms
  • RLS (restless leg syndrome)
  • low immunity
  • bulging/herniated discs
  • fibromyalgia
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • neck/arm/shoulder pain
  • weight problems
  • low back pain/sciatica
  • numbness
  • thyroid dysfunction
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • migraines

Who discovered BBT?

Brain Based Therapy is a clinical, functional neurological protocol developed by Dr. Fred Carrick, the country’s leading chiropractic neurologist and chiropractic’s only neurological fellow. The Carrick Institute offers classes internationally and helps patients around the world with severe neurological disorders.

Take a look at our testimonals on this site as well as the ones at www.lifechangingcare.com and see how our clinic and hundreds of other clinics across the country are using BBT to help people get out of chronic pain and change their lives!

Many conditions may be improved such  low thyroid conditions, blood sugar problems, autoimmune,  ADHD, autism, dyslexia, chronic pain, migraine, chronic fatigue, insomnia, MS, dizziness, and balance problems.
